Thessaloniki suffered major destruction from fires and earthquakes until the great fire of 1890, but the city’s image did not radically change because the burnt down buildings were rebuilt at the same location and to the same height. This did not occur after the great fire of 1917, which destroyed most of the city centre. The old urban plan was done away with and a new city plan was drawn up, with wider streets and larger land plots.
